Congratulations to BriSCA F1 Stock Car driver extraordinaire Mick Sworder (150) who took the 2nd World Championship Semi Final of 2012 at Birmingham Wheels on Saturday 28th July.
A large crowd saw Mick take the flag with ease towards the end after some fierce challenges and exchanges with his fellow front of the grid starters Tom Harris (84), Fairhurst (27) and Matt Newson (16)
For the second year running, both Lee Fairhurst and Matt Newson failed to finish and will have to take the final route to Skegness via the Consolation Semi with Matt hoping already for a repeat win in last years race and Lee hoping to go at least one place better than last year to get him on the back of the World Final Grid!
It will be Lee who will feel the most disappointed having led the Semi Final race for quite a while, but after a brief stoppage at the halfway stage to recover a piece of debris on turn 3, Lee fell by the wayside from a then 3rd place to a retirement shortly afterwads to the infield.
It was just before halfway that Sworder took the lead with Harris taking second from Fairhurst who had slid wide on turn 4 to avoid a stationary car.
The re-start provided the chance for Harris to take top spot, but Sworder drove away at the green and directly to the chequered flag to the applause of the crowd with his extra special celebrations which included a 90 degree sideways move to actually take the flag and a massive doughnut to celebrate with the turn 3 crowd.
It's congratulations too to Danny Wainmn(212) who quietly popped himself onto the podium in 3rd place - he was well chuffed with that as was Ryan Harrison in 4th place, but deapite the 150 win, surely the result of the night went to the superb Rob Speak (318) who took an incredible 5th place and a row 7 start at Skegness - could the unthinkable happen in September?
Could Rob Speak take his 2nd F1 World title? You can already hear the 'Speaky for Gold' chants!
World Semi Final Result:- 150 - 84- 212 - 197 - 318 - 21 - 484 - 462 - 53 - 218
The final ceremony of the Semi Final event was to see who was to secure the actual pole posiion at Skegness.
With Semi Final 1 Frankie Wainman Jnr (515) away with Jnr Jnr in the Isle of Man Incarace took the unique approach by getting Frank on his mobile and the 'toss of the coin' took place just as if Frank was present - he even had chance to say hello to the crowd!
Mick Sworder threw the coin and despite a minor hitch with the connection at the crucial point, Frank did chose correct by calling 'tails' and promptly confirmed that he wished to start from pole position with a still jubilant Mick Sworder on outside pole.
A great race and excellent all around meeting, especially the F1 Final, which was taken by a very happy Mark Gilbank (21)
