Many thanks for the support from all drivers, spectators, staff and officials at Saturday's Champion of Champions meeting at Birmingham Wheels.
Despite an awful weather forecast, which was spot on for a change, the weather didn't put a lot of fans off and sizeable crowds were treated to some excellent racing in difficult conditions.
Thank you to everyone for signing the Incarace 2012 season off in style.
Here is a brief review of the meeting from Dave Goddard....
FOR ONCE the forecasters got it right on November 24th and torrential rain greeted the country’s top National Banger racers as they arrived at Birmingham for the Unlimited Champion of Champions, the entry slightly down on the booked roster as a result but 100 cars was still an impressive turnout, the field including drivers from Wales, Scotland and even Holland in the shape of 220 Marco Lode. There were some top cars present too with plenty of fresh Granadas including stunning Mk1s for 777 Jamie Charles and 451 Will Blackwell, lots of Japanese material, a Rover P5 for 122 Steve Durkin, a Humber for 880 Neil Naismith, a pair of Mk10 Jaguars and an Australian Ford Falcon for 20 Wayne Brooke.
Two last chance races kicked off the programme with 247 Lee Clarke (Supra) putting in an excellent full contact drive to win the first and 160 Shayn Winsor taking the second after early leaders 310 John Nicholson and 18 Lee Clelland were both taken out while around them the Gladiators v Cream Team war kicked off. 36 cars gridded for the main race with a scrappy start seeing 124 Carl Korszewski lead away from pole position until back marker 353 Dan Buckley in one of the Mk10s removed him handing 528 Alan Hunt the lead but he was then spun by Blackwell allowing 218 Rob Speak to take over. The all-round oval racing superstar raced clear with a faultless drive to take the biggest Banger title of his career so far, 162 Brett Ellacott – whose sideways driving in his Mk10 was a highlight of the evening – taking second and Blackwell third, while 67 Rickie Beasley took the entertainer prize with a big shot on 275 Joe Morgan in the closing stages.
A sequence of huge shots between the Cream Team and Gladiators was the highlight of the Allcomers which was won by 707 John Randall, before the Final saw Speak shake off the attentions of Ellacott for his second win as Buckley’s classic Jag was trashed by 623 Ricky Hutton. A dozen cars came back for the DD which saw the Creams on top in the team war, 662 Jamie Harding the last man running.
The Ministox were in superb form too with a cracking opening heat won by RDC visitor 344 Ross Fisher, but second place was enough for 236 Ryan Polley to retain the points championship for a second year. He was second again in heat two behind 242 Steve Gilbert with the West Country driver later securing a heat and Final double amid some superb close battles.
Thanks to Matt Bull at Race Pixels for the photos.
