644 MARK THOMPSON established a big lead in the Reliant Robins Midlands Mayhem series at a wet Birmingham Wheels on Saturday night, writes Dave Goddard.
Having won the Final at the previous week’s opening round at Grimley, Thompson’s rapid Reliant mastered the slippery conditions well and scored a faultless hat-trick of wins at Wheels, while behind him the likes of 470 Wayne Perry, 96 Gareth Davies and the Black Country Badgers team entertained with a succession of rollovers. Thompson’s main challenger was 499 Lee Charles but he unfortunately suffered an injury in the second heat – get well soon Lee.
The BriSCA F2s saw a hard luck story in both heats as 184 Aaron Vaight led most of the way in both only for a clogged fuel filter to halt him on the penultimate lap of each race. 1 Micky Brennan and 7 Gordon Moodie were the beneficiaries to pick up the wins, while in the Final gold top Brennan caught 115 Mike Green with a couple of laps to go and made it two Birmingham Final wins in a row – and three in eight days after another win at Buxton last Sunday. Moodie dropped out of the GN which saw Vaight finally put his bad luck to rest with his first Birmingham win of the year.
The Rebels were totally dominated by 656 Adam Joyce who scored a perfect four wins out of four as he revelled in the wet conditions. In the heats he was in front from the back of the grid in as little as five laps on a night of perfection for the silver top, 170 Craig Thompson his runner-up three times before impressive white top 238 Gary Tagg took second in the GN.
The first Stock Rod meeting of the season saw 874 Gareth Barton take the opening heat for his first win in two years, the race halted early on for stranded newcomer 815 Joe Bennett, while the rest of the meeting was dominated by 136 Steve Gooch who scored a heat and Final double, passing impressive debutant 845 Lea Morris each time.
