Three days, three venues and over 40 races – that was August Bank Holiday weekend at Incarace!
The action began at Birmingham Wheels on Saturday night where the BriSCA F1s were back, white tops 103 Rich Masterson and 392 Chad Evans right at the forefront of the action with the former leading most of the way in heat one but 300 Paul Carter pounced to take the spoils, heat two seeing 488 Mike Kingston mark a rare outing with victory. Evans led the Final past half distance but 422 Dave Riley took over and went clear for his first Final win in some time, the GN seeing 1 Lee Fairhurst launch a large last bend lunge on 37 Chris Cowley but he missed and Cowley took the win.
The V8 Hot Stox began with 64 Simon Sykes spinning out of the lead of heat one giving 175 Karl Hawkins the win while 12 Michael Scriven took the second heat. 288 Jon Brown led most of the way in the Final until Hawkins took over but he was docked for an out of position start giving Brown the win and the Incarace Gold Cup, 355 Bryan Andrew winning the GN.
The National Ministox meanwhile provided the best action of the evening, 60 Matt Venables taking heat one and 323 Harry Peall heat two before a huge six-way scrap in the midfield was the highlight of heat three with 180 Courtney Witts passing 269 Ben Chalkley to win it. Five drivers fought over the lead in the Final with a last bend ruck seeing Peall pass three drivers in one move, taking the win by a hundredth of a second.
The action moved on to Hednesford for a rescheduled meeting on Sunday with the feature event the Midlands Mayhem Final for the Reliant Robins with 15 entries arriving. 78 Mark Bowskill won the last chance race before the title race was led early on by 304 Tim Weare before 48 “Stupid Stu” Belcher took over, a home straight crash causing a stoppage when 47 Richard Cook went over and was collected by 285 Iain Nicklin with Bowskill also involved. Belcher then lived up to his nickname as he rolled himself with two laps to go and 644 Mark Thomson took the title. 444 Mark Loader won the Allcomers race before the Figure of 8 finale began with a big roll for Bowskill who lost his roof panels as he hit the fence but fortunately he was OK, Loader taking the win on the restart.
The Grand Prix Midgets contested their World Championship in association with Superslicks, 31 Jonathan Pooley starting from pole and he was never threatened en route to his fourth successive World title, father 33 Gordon in second ahead of 10 Dave Bonser with 32 Daniel Pooley fourth, the latter dominating both heats.
The Incarods contested their biggest meeting of the year with their National Championship, a rather bruising heat one seeing 20 Adam Priest take the win ahead of 214 Graeme Clarke who went one better to win heat two after passing his sister 73 Keri. Graeme was on pole for the main event but made a slow start and 7 Lee Clark raced clear to win the title followed home by the two heat winners.
Incarace Banger star and all-round lunatic Lee Usher meanwhile successfully completed the Car Domino stunt, using an American Oldsmobile to knock down five cars positioned on their ends across the track in a shower of glass and metal.
Then on Monday a huge crowd gathered at a red hot Pr1mo Northampton for the annual Caravan Grand Prix, 14 rigs lining up for the feature event and predictably most of the vans were soon reduced to matchwood as the drivers piled in, 103 Patrick Bryan’s bodywork snagged on the fence in one neat piece while 510 Dave Wooding buried himself in 394 Ian Rawlings’ van. 293 Roy Williams soon had the last intact caravan but it was his team mate 308 Kev Baxter who won the race and he also took the DD after 72 Tom Carr finished himself off by destroying Williams’ van ending a brilliant event. Earlier in the day 471 Trevor Perry and 90 Joey Holmes had won the regular Banger races.
The National Hot Rods contested round two of World Series England with the entry including 305 Billy Wood in his new car but 2 Ken Marriott totally dominated the day with a flawless hat-trick of wins, leading every lap he contested with 141 Martyn Ginger and 89 Mick Cave following him home in the main race, 113 Stuart McLaird winning the other heat on a day when many of the big stars were off the pace.
The Classic Hot Rods saw heat wins for 10 Paul Bowring and 244 Fil Gambone and it looked as though Bowring was going to complete his double in the Final but his car let him down and Gambone took his second win, while the legendary 306 George Polley returned but was plagued by mechanical problems.
The Legends contested the Des Chandler Trophy with 123 Chris Prior holding off 516 Paul Fiore to win heat one with the latter spinning on the last bend, the same fate befalling Prior in heat two allowing welcome returnee 5 Branson Poyner to win it. The Trophy race was led early on by 955 Harry-Lee Wills but 66 Martin Heath came through to take the victory, while heat one saw 43 Peter Elliott roll in the middle of a home straight smash but he repaired for the Final.
Thankyou to everyone involved for making this busy Bank Holiday weekend one of the most successful this season – racing now continues into the autumn.
