With the 'Rookie' Banger World fast approaching on 19th October, we thought it sensible to clarify a few of the rules with which we have issues from time to time, particularly as there will be a lot of visiting drivers on the day.
Although recently improving, the most common problems we have are with tyre tread depth and welded engine mounts.
Tyre tread rule - only conventional tyres are permitted with a MAXIMUM TREAD DEPTH OF 6MM. Tyres must also read over 60 on a durometer at any time.
Engine mounts - these must be original and not welded, except on Cavaliers and Astras where the front alloy may be replaced, and on a Focus where the driver's side mount only may be replaced with a solid mount. In each case the mount must remain in its original position.
Drivers are also asked to check the rules and ensure they do not have cut / non standard springs, crank pulleys missing, oversize left hand door plates, crush tubes, illegal welding, excessive bonnet and door bolts, absent fuel shut off taps, bare wire starting, roof plates fitted where no sun roof exists, and front bumpers remaining.
All of these items are quite clear in the rules, so there is really no valid excuse for not getting it right on the night!
From World Final night onwards we are also banning twin cam Honda engines, and drivers are also reminded that they cannot use a v-tec engine in a Rover as they were not made with them - engine changes are not permitted.
