VETERAN'S DAY AT HEDNESFORD! - Added 27/06/24

HEDNESFORD HILLS RACEWAY’S 61st consecutive season of racing is celebrated in style at the Bill Morris Veteran’s Day on Sunday June 30th in a day fuelled by nostalgia.

Stars from across the legendary quarter mile oval’s past will descend for this special occasion, with many of them donning overalls and making a one-off comeback to take on their old rivals and create living history.

The Veteran Unlimited National Bangers have a great entry list, with plenty of the sport’s big names of old taking to the 1/4 miler with plenty of representation from different generations of racers at the Staffordshire venue. We look forward to seeing these faces back at the Raceway for a day which is always a special event.

The ‘old guard’ are joined by the Unlimited National Bangers racing in ‘Old Skool’ rules - with the younger generation being given the chance to blast their unlimited CC cars around the high speed quarter miler.

When it comes to Banger racing at Hednesford Hills, though, it’s not always about the drivers. The National Bangers will be racing for the Brian Portsmouth Trophy, in memory of our much-missed scrutineer who was ‘part of the furniture’ at the Raceway over his illustrious career. Alongside Hednesford Hills Raceway, Brian was one of the main characters involved with the Wolverhampton Car Project which back in the day used to help youngsters and educate them in car mechanics which used to see many of Brian apprentices racing the cars they had built at Hednesford.

Always kind, always caring and always willing to give his time especially to the upcoming and new drivers and guide them in the right direction - as well as providing those one liners which had us all laughing.

Speaking of legends of the Raceway, and of course Veteran’s Day means we celebrate the founder of Hot Rod racing in this country - and the person who put Hednesford Hills on the map - Bill Morris. The home of Hot Rod racing title at the venue is thanks to Bill Morris, who's vision for the sport has provided us with so many memories over the past 60 years - and we roll back the years with a packed field of retro racers taking to the tarmac in a celebration of the great man.
Without Bill we would not have any form of Hot Rod racing along with his - and our - much loved Hednesford Hills Raceway.

After many visits to the USA, he became close friends will Bill France from Daytona Raceway. Bill's vision was to bring a little NASCAR to the UK, along with a race track that was on a much smaller scale - yet alike. This vision, fuelled by a desire and passion, was fulfilled in the early 1960s where the first Hot Rods were being seen on his slightly inclined track - and 60 years later the sport has survived economic hardship, the dreaded pandemic and many more challenges to thrive in the 21st century.

Last year it was #197 Charlie Sayers who piloted his Anglia to victory, but this year he sees fierce competition in the formula which is on a real resurgence. Watch out for names returning - and debuting - in the Classic Hot Rod formula, and standby for a high speed history lesson!

Completing the lineup are the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars racing in the 2024 Challenge Cup, with the event being revived in recent years and #560 Luke Wrench defending his title. The formula are going from strength-to-strength at the minute, with plenty of great action over the year - especially at the Hednesford World Qualifier in the Spring, which saw a huge entry of cars take to the track.

The thrills, the spills and so many memories all back at the Raceway on Sunday - don't miss this special event…
