Following on from a successful (but wet and muddy) Coventry meeting in 2011, the Superstox returned to the Brandon shaleway for the 2012 Midlands Championship.
A good grid of 31 cars arrived on a pleasant afternoon with the track in excellent condition and hopes were high among the drivers that they could top the great show that they put on in 2011.
The action came thick and fast in Heat One as the bumpers flew in on every corner. 419 Chris Capon built up a good lead in the early stages as the drivers behind battled for position. 161 Billy Smith made a good break from the star grade, catching and passing the 419 machine at around halfway. Chris Bradbury 886 made rapid progress from the rear of the grid to eventually finish second to the 161 car.
Heat Two was another fine race as the drivers enjoyed a track in peak condition. The race was stopped for an incident on the back straight when 540 Brett Wesbroom unfortunately collided with the stranded 125 Peter Gray machine - both drivers were ok but the 125 car certainly looked worse for wear. Having made good progress in the early stages, Chris Bradbury hit the front shortly after the restart and was never headed - taking a good win from an on-form 521 Alan Gray. The action didn't stop there as Liam Lambert rolled over in a clash with Phil Proctor 279 as they crossed the line!
The Midlands Championship final started with 51 Colin Aylward planting the bumper heavily into the back of Bradbury on turns 1 & 2 - effectively ending Bradbury's hopes of a final win. These two drivers clashed again a few laps later as Aylward bumpered a slow moving 886 wide - only for the 886 machine to lunge at Aylward going into turn 3! Ryan Eaton had made a great break from the superstars and was the first of the big names to catch the leading group. Ryan subsequently hit the front as a great 3 way battle for the podium positions eventually saw 369 Paul Langridge finish second from Ben Marjoram in car #60. 521 Alan Gray came home 4th with David Pike 454 in 5th to conclude a great night's racing from the Superstox!
The National Bangers were also at Coventry that night and the 42 cars that arrived put on a great show with plenty of good hits and action for the spectators to enjoy - thanks to all who attended this fantastic event!
Thanks to Matt Bull for the photos.
