Spedeworth would like to take this opportunity to make a formal statement on the incident at the Superstox British Championship at Wimbledon Stadium on Sunday night.
Repair time is something which is always only allocated in World title races should there be a race stoppage for any reason.
When 161 Billy Smith crashed out early in the race he took the opportunity to change a wheel while the fence was being repaired. As the prior arrangement had not permitted repairs, he was not allowed to join the restart.
While Spedeworth can understand his frustration, the rules cannot be changed part way through a race. Yes the fence repair may have afforded sufficient time for Billy to carry out his own repair, but what if one of the drivers already re-lined up ready to go had some repairs they would like to carry out to their car but had not tried knowing they were not permitted too? The line has to be drawn somewhere and it has always been in the same place.
It was certainly in our interest to have Billy in the race, and indeed we had put the Spedeworth in-car camera in his car anticipating some fireworks one way or the other in his battle with Stuart Gilchrist, but we do not feel that the rules can be changed mid-race.
