NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND
HEDNESFORD HILLS RACEWAY’S Hot Rod weekend of the year takes place on August 6th and 7th with the staging of the 53rd National Championship Weekend.
A triple figure entry of cars will pack the pits while tents, caravans and motorhomes will fill the Cannock Chase raceway’s unique bowl-shaped surrounds for the ultimate short oval party weekend.
The ultra fast National Hot Rods as always provide the centrepiece of the weekend at their home venue. Last year saw probably the most extraordinary title race in the long history of the Nationals as the leading bunch tangled together down the home straight, eliminating 42 Shane Bland and 54 Adam Hylands among others, while on the restart 76 Adam Maxwell’s car let him down and with almost all the other leading runners having dropped out it was 940 Gary Woolsey who came back from a bad start to win his first National title, very few cars going the distance.
Maxwell made up for his 2015 disappointment at this year’s Spedeweekend at Ipswich by becoming the latest Northern Ireland driver to win the World Championship, while his fellow countrymen 9 Glenn Bell, Hylands, 20 Derek Martin and veteran 994 Keith Martin plus 2 Litre Hot Rod graduate 70 Shane Murray will lead the immensely strong Northern Irish field – plus, will 962 John Christie bring back his classic Ford Fiesta? Former World and National winner 970 Shane Murphy leads the Republic of Ireland challenge along with 955 Damian Mulvey and seemingly perennial nearly-man 261 David Casey, while 844 Billy Bonnar and former BriSCA F2 man 36 Roy Anderson will be top of the Scots along with 117 Rob McDonald who does his racing across England. The English challenge will be led by 115 Chris Haird, recent Aldershot winner 305 Billy Wood and 174 Jason Kew, but World Series England champion 162 Carl Waller-Barratt will be a major factor – having beaten Bland to the title by three inches in the last round at Ipswich! This really is the highlight of the Hot Rod racing season alongside the World Final.
The Lightning Rods are always huge favourites at this two day motorsport spectacular, and the stars from Northern Ireland are set to start as favourites here as well. 974 Gary Beggs won the World Final at the Ipswich Spedeweekend and he and former gold top 970 Scott Cochrane will start as the favourites, while the home heroes will be led by the Murray family with Incarace silver top and British Champion 50 Ben Murray the top man alongside brothers 503 Jordan and 591 Reid plus their father 53 Colin. 51 Andy King meanwhile defends the title but has endured a season of struggle so far and several new names have risen towards the top at Incarace this year including the Burgess family and former National Champion 80 Andy Minshull who has made a fine comeback, while the leading names from Spedeworth include 636 Lee Skoyles, 337 Ashley Birkin and 688 Carl Offord.
Northern Ireland also defends the Stock Rod National title currently held by 944 Derek McMillan after his hugely emotional win last year, while 65 Steve McNeice took the World Final held at Tipperary earlier this year after a dominant drive. 447 Stuart Smyth and 168 Andy Sturt will lead the Spedeworth challenge once again while 876 Lewis Clark and 669 Ed Trofer have been the leading contenders at Incarace this year along with 16-year old 97 Jack Bradburn who will be one of the youngest drivers to compete at the Nationals in recent seasons. These small but spectacular hatchback racers will provide some of the closest races of the weekend.
For the second time at National Weekend the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars are on the bill, with some of the top tarmac racers in the country set to descend upon last year’s World Final venue. 101 Kelvyn Marshall dominated the World and should be back again, with 154 Michael Green, 59 Lee Dimmick and 968 Micky Brennan his likely main challengers alongside any of the Scottish contingent.
Qualifying takes place on Saturday with championship day on the Sunday – do not miss these two massive days of motorsport.
