Calling the weather wet at Wimbledon on New Years Day for the Winternationals event may be an early contender for understatement of the year! However, this did not deter a reasonable number of Superstox drivers from taking to the track in search of the first spoils of 2012.
The heats were run in the usual graded order and featured the very rare appearance of 305 Billy Wood in one the Safari Engineering Superstox owned by 124 Dave Miles Snr. The drivers were setting a great pace around Plough Lane until the race was brought to a halt when 482 Jason Cooper thundered straight into a post just past the pit gate - it appeared that Jason's throttle stuck open and everyone was relieved to see Jason climb from his car after several moments - from all of us at Spedeworth Motorsports we hope to see you back out soon Jason. It was 161 Billy Smith who broke free from the red grade early and managed to get ahead and stay there - despite the constant presence of 376 Steven Jackson in his mirror.
After the first heat, two special presentations were made where 233 Ben Munford was given a trophy as the driver who had featured in the most Superstox races in 2011 and 176 Alex Meadows received an award for the most committed driver of 2011 - it is difficult to think of two more deserving drivers - well done to you both!
Steven Jackson made no mistake in the second heat as he claimed victory in a race that saw many cars spinning out as the drivers struggled in awful conditions.
The Winternationals Final saw another race where the drivers managed to conquer the conditions to put on a great show for the sizeable crowd inside Wimbledon Stadium. On a day where the star & superstar graded drivers had won both of the heats; the final yet again saw the drivers towards the back of the grid slice their way through the traffic. As the chequered flag fell it was European Champion 69 Shaun Brooker who crossed the line in first place - maintaining his reputation as one of the formulas wet weather experts. Former double World Champion 7 Glenn Salmon finished second with Heat One winner 161 Billy Smith in third (on a day where he was also racing his Lightning Rod).
